Meet "The Cumberland" River Dulcimer, Special Edition, Flame Maple Back!

Whether you’re an expert musician or just starting out, The Cumberland is designed for you. Its light and portable build means you can take it anywhere – from jam sessions with friends to impromptu performances on your back porch as the sun goes down.

This River Dulcimer comes with a full chromatic fret layout, giving you all the frets you need to play any song. It’s tuned to DAD – just like the strings of a traditional dulcimer, but fretted like a standard guitar, ukulele, or mandolin (i.e., all the scale notes, not just the key of D). Complete with Stringjoy strings, and expertly crafted by our partnering luthier, it'll surprise you how rich, crisp, and full it sounds.

Sometimes we end up with a piece of wood that's just a little cooler than the rest. Most maple is not available in a wide enough board to be able to create single piece bodies. And flamed maple is rare, and difficult to predict when it'll show up. So when Nick found both a maple piece wide enough to be a single piece body AND a flame pattern to the grain... well, it was Special.

🎶 About Chromatic Tuning:

Chromatic dulcimers are tuned DAD, like a traditional dulcimer guitar; however, they include "all" the frets required for the full western 12-tone scale. That's a mouthful, and simply means you can play all the notes, and also play in any key.

If you're familiar with traditional dulcimers, a chromatic dulcimer will be a new adventure, and a bit of a brain buster (in all the best ways)! You'll also unlock a load of new creative spaces by including more keys.

And if you come from the world of guitars, you'll find a familiar home with the fully fretted neck, while the open DAD tuning will give you a new playground of opportunities. Strum away while you find a new melody. You're going to enjoy it, I guarantee!
