"The Weight" solo on Cumberland Dulcimer Guitar w/ Justin Blanner

I only found out after Justin recorded this that The Band might actually be his all-time favorite band. (Pretty sure those were his exact words.)
Which makes a lot of sense once you hear this.
This song has been so woven into classic rock radio and the broader American songbook that I’ll admit — I’d never really sat down and given it a deep listen. It’s just… always been there. Like musical background architecture.
But when you slow it down and actually pay attention?
There’s more going on than you’d think.
It’s not 100% straightforward. The way the melody leans against the chords, the phrasing of the lyrics, the subtle rhythmic push and pull — it’s got that sneaky sophistication that The Band was so good at. It sounds effortless, but it’s not simple.
That’s usually the sign of a great tune.
Have a listen to Justin’s take and see what you think.
And here’s the real question — should we turn this into a full lesson?
Let us know down in the comments. I’m curious where y’all land on this one.
Thanks, y’all.
